The Kara family has been living in Zurich for many years and is dominated by the patriarchal and devout father Abdullah. While the eldest son Kadir and daughter Elif have found their place both within the Turkish family as well as in the Western world, the youngest son Burak struggles with the lack of recognition from his father and his search for his own identity between both worlds. Burak renounces the Western world and places the Koran at the center of his worldview.

Initially impressed by their son’s strict beliefs, Abdullah and Emine realize too late that Burak has already slipped away and is on his way to the holy war. The father sets out to look for his son in the Turkish-Syrian border area.
