Riggan Thomson hopes to revive his dwindling career with the production of an ambitious Broadway show, among other things. It’s an audacious undertaking, but the former iconic superhero is full of hope that this creative adventure will legitimate him as an artist and prove to everyone, including himself, that he isn’t a washed-up Hollywood star.

But with the premiere of the play fast approaching, Riggan’s leading actor is injured in a bizarre accident and he has to find a replacement. Upon recommendation by his leading actress Lesley and the insistence of his best friend and producer Jake, Riggan reluctantly hires Mike Shiner – a loose cannon, but, at the same time, a guarantee for ticket sales and enthusiastic reviews.

During the preparations for his stage debut, he not only has to deal with his girlfriend and co-star Laura, but also with his fresh-out-of-rehab daughter and assistant Sam and his ex-wife Sylvia, who shows up occasionally to make sure things are going her way.
