The German Democratic Republic, 30 years ago. A student asks too many questions, is kicked out of the university and sent to work in a production plant. On his search for intellectual stimulation, he visits the Protestant Student Association (PSA) in Magdeburg, where he voices his opinions publicly.

A different young man believes in the socialist movement and goes to the PSA to try to convince critical students of socialist goals. He is recruited by the secret police and reports, as the unofficial employee “Hans Kramer”, about a particularly insubordinate young man. The Office for National Security orders “Hans Kramer” to befriend the “enemy”, which results in fatal consequences. The files of the secret police from back then and the emotional encounter between the two men today conform to a story about friendship and betrayal, hope and disappointment, guilt and forgiveness.
