A small town in the southern states of America at the end of the 1950s: in Caxton, a law is introduced to integrate the African-American population into a school previously only attended by whites. When the charismatic politician Adam Cramer arrives in town, he challenges the new law publicly with inflammatory slogans, inciting the white population to commit acts of violence against the black minority.
