Anna Magdalena Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s second wife, didn’t leave a diary; rather, her life is re-told based on surviving manuscripts, letters and contemporary accounts. In long shots, Anna Magdalena’s portrait is intervowen with the couple’s life which centres on music. The film documents Bach’s daily battles for enough work to earn his family’s keep but above all makes musical matter visible and audible.
