A little girl walks into a court room, looks the judge straight in the eye and says: “I want a divorce.” It’s the year 2014 in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. Nojoom is 10 years old when her father marries her off. She’s still an innocent child, in every aspect. Nojoom imagines her wedding to be like a fairytale: a princess in a white gown who marries her prince. But the glittering and glimmering wedding is only a figment of the imagination. Even when Nojoom surprises her parents one evening during a conversation about her fiancé, she is not afraid of the future. Nojoom’s wedding takes place and she is raped, beaten and humiliated on the very same evening. Completely terrorized, she manages to escape and finds a judge who takes on her case and offers her protection. After a turbulent trial, Nojoom is indeed granted a divorce. A precedence, there has never been such an outcome for a legal case in Yemen.
