Anna lives in a sanatorium by the sea, isolated from the world. Her only joy in life is her grown-up daughter, Marie. Marie visits her mother and asks her to return home and make a fresh start. Anna’s farewell from her daughter will be her last … A few days later, a forester finds a woman dead in the lake.
After Marie’s mysterious death, her mother gives up her isolation and meddles in detective Michaelis’s investigations with surprising energy. Michaelis is a stranger in town. Transferred for disciplinary reasons, he is a disillusioned, lonely man who finds solace in drink and cynicism. Despite serious clashes with Anna, they both sense a common bond.
With joint effort, they find Robert Kunze who confesses to the murder. Before court, however, he withdraws his confession, supported by an alibi from his best friend’s wife. Kunze is declared not guilty. One day, Anna meets the man suspected of killing her daughter …
