“My name is Rolf Köster. For sixteen years now I’ve been employed at a local bank branch as cashier. I never think about the fact that day by day I watch the world through a 3 cm glass pane. I don’t think about the fact that I hardly know my family. I don’t want to think about it. Every morning I leave the house at the same time, get on the bus and spend the day behind my pane of glass. In the evening and at weekends I’m with my family. We have a 13-year-old daughter who writes more diary than she talks and a 6-year-old son who has to wear a cyclist’s helmet because he constantly bashes his head into some wall or other. But those are things my wife has to deal with, I’m responsible just for the background.
Some days I barely recognize myself. On such days I think about everything, doubt everything. I don’t know whether I’m happy or not. In any case I never really considered the question. I have a family, a small house, a job. What more could you want? That’s what they always say, isn’t it?” But one day, Rolf Köster gets a week off work. He will mention it neither to his wife nor to his kids. As usual, he’ll leave the house every morning und return at the usual time. Holidays from life. Time for himself.
