It is autumn. In the small Danish port of Nakskov, the chimneys of the sugar refinery smoke tirelessly. It’s the last year of high school for Sara and her friends. They talk about the future, about their desire to live in a big city. Karen moved to the island to start her first teaching job. In class, discussions arise: What is femininity? What is masculinity? What is art? Who sees us and how are we perceived? Who and what makes us into the people we are?

Sara is fascinated by the new teacher, but her friends think Karen is strange – “perhaps a bit too feminist”. Between theater rehearsals and DYI constructions, Sara attempts to get closer to Karen. And then something unexpected happens.
